History of the Fila Brasileiro

The history of the Fila Brasileiro goes back several centuries. There are different versions how this exotic breed originates. All versions are closely linked with the history, development and colonization of Brazil.
The first version, according to Dr. Santos Cruz.

The Fila Brasileiro seems to be the result of crossbreeding with the old / historic English Mastiff.
The breed was brought by the Portuguese rulers and changed over time by local influences.
The Fila seems to be the result of consistently crossing the Mastiff, Bloodhound (St. Hubert Dog) and English Bulldog.

The authors of "The Encyclopedia" doubts this version because it is nothing else than assumptions and there is no convincing evidence documented.

The second version by Joan Baptist Gomes.

The genealogy of the Fila Brasileiro originated from the Fila Terseirense named after the Terseirense island in the Azores. According to Joan Gomes, the king Thurs Janns IV Brazil  had English Mastiffs that were popular at that time. Because of unfortunate crossing it resulted in a mixture of the Fila Terseirense and the English Mastiff.

The author of "The Encyclopedia", studied the history of the Fila's Terseirense but didn't find any confirmation for this version.
The third version, according Francisc Peltieru di Caros.

The Fila Brasileiro is born from European breeds like the English Mastiff, Bloodhound, Bulldogs, and the wild dogs from Brazil.

The authors of "The Encyclopedia" find no logical explanation for this version. The logical question that calls this version is: "Why would the european Portuguees rulers wanted to cross purebreds with local breeds. The local residents were "wild"  in their view let alone their dogs.

The fourth version according to Prokopio Valie, author of "The Encyclopedia"

On the basis of the Portuguese meaning of the word Fila, the author defines the name of the breed as a chained dog, once he has his prey will not let go. The author claims that the breed originated from the following 5 factors: Wild impenetrable forests, courage, people, livestock and vigilance. These factors have determined the long life of this particular breed.
According to the writer the Fila comes out of European blood, such as English Mastiff, English Doggen brought to Brazil by Dutch in 1631. The author reaches this conclusion based on old documents from archives, writings of travelers and historians. Based on these documents, he claims that the basis of the Fila is created from the blood of the English Danes.

Which of these versions is correct, we may never know. According to many the Fila naturally arise without specific breedselectiong. The appearance of the Fila had to look menacing because they were also used as watchdogs to detect runaway slaves. The Fila was to guard livestock and protect it from jaguars. Only brave, strong and tough dogs could accomplish this task. The result was a super-dog with the strength and mass of a mastiff, the nose of a bloodhound, the wildness and flexibility of a wild cat and great stamina.

Yet there are many who also agree that in the particular characteristics of Fila you can find English Mastiff, Bulldog and Bloodhound.

The influence of the mastiff is seen in the large head, short neck, and large volume and the protective instinct. Mastiffs were used in ancient wars and  in hunting big game. The old mastiff attacked the enemy head on, only standing on his hind legs. At present temperaments testing of the current Fila you still see he rears up to his attacker.

The old bulldog has a major influence on the current Fila. They used to have a longer nose compared to the current Bulldogs, they were stubborn, brave in battle, tenacious. From the bulldog, the Fila has its temperament, sometimes the stuborn behavior but also his determined behavior.

The influence of the bloodhound are the low set ears, loose skin and the pear-shaped head and the well pronounced backhead. The bloodhound is also responsible for the hanging lips, the thick skin, camelwalk, pronounced smell. Surprisingly, the bloodhound is also responsible for the legendary "Ojeriza 'mistrust of strangers. Old bloodhounds were extremely distrustful to strangers and favored a strong family bond. The melancholic gaze of the Fila comes directly from the Bloodhound.
